As a leader in the revolution of non-fusion spine technology, Dr. Pettine has trademarked the phrase “friends don’t let friends get fused.” His passion is to provide patients with non-fusion surgical options.
Dr. Pettine has an extensive 20-year experience performing spinal surgery, research and rehabilitation. He is board certified and a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, the Spine Arthroplasty Society, and the International Spinal Injection Society. He received his spine fellowship training at the Institute for Low Back Care in Minneapolis. Dr. Pettine completed his residency and his master’s degree in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. His medical degree was awarded from the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Dr. Pettine is the co-inventor of the Maverick™ Artificial Disc. This device is widely used outside the United States as an alternative to lumbar fusion and is currently pending U.S. FDA approval. He is a co-designer of the Prestige™ cervical artificial disc. The Prestige™ disc is FDA approved and currently available at The Spine Institute.
Dr. Pettine is an international leader in non-fusion spine research and surgical achievements. These non-fusion surgical achievements include:
- Performing the first two-level, three-level and four-level NeoDisc™ cervical arthroplasties in the world.
- Performing the first surgery of the Hydraflex™ nucleus arthroplasty system in the United States.
- Implanting the first Coflex™ device in the United States.
- Performing the very first DSS™ spine stabilization system procedure in the United States.
- Performing the very first Kineflex™ lumbar artificial disc surgery in the United States.
- Performing the first three level Prestige™ cervical artificial disc in the world.
He is currently the principal investigator of 13 FDA IDE studies all involving non-fusion research, providing his patients access to the latest non-fusion technology. Two of these studies are evaluating stem cells and condrocytes in the treatment of low back pain.
