Cardiovascular Services at Harrison Medical Center

The cardiac diagnosis and treatment tools your heart requires are right here at Harrison Medical Center—cardiac catheterization labs, a peripheral vascular lab, an electrophysiology lab, interventional cardiology, angiography, nuclear medicine, angioplasty, MRI, cardiac CT multi-slice imaging, three dozen invasive and non-invasive heart and vascular procedures, and more.

Our quality care continues with individualized recovery and rehabilitation programs, education, and support.

Timely intervention
If you experience a heart attack, our highly skilled care team can rescue your heart muscle quickly. We perform lifesaving balloon angioplasty or coronary intervention (door-to-balloon time) in less than 60 minutes—more than 30 minutes faster than the recommended national goal.

Open-heart surgery

The gold standard of clinical excellence in heart care is three stars. Harrison Medical Center’s award-winning cardiothoracic surgery program has achieved this highest category of quality by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons for overall performance.

The three-star rating—designated for the data reporting period of July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009—puts our program in the top 10 percent of nearly 900 hospitals across the nation.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ three-star rating is a composite score that represents new standards in the assessment of clinical performance. Eleven of 21 National Quality Forum measures are included to determine the composite score. Those 11 are divided into four domains:

  • Avoidance of mortality (death)
  • Avoidance of morbidity (disease)
  • Use of internal mammary artery (related to care during cardiac surgery)
  • Appropriate medications given (pre- and post-surgery)

Our highly successful outcomes are the result of advanced technology and a team of experts—from board-certified cardiothoracic surgeons to board-certified and TEE-certified cardiac-trained anesthesiologists to specially trained nurses—who have:

  • Performed more than 1,000 open-heart surgeries.
  • Been consistently rated by patients in the 99th percentile, according to Press Ganey surveys.
  • Ranked No. 1 in Washington and received the 2007 HealthGrades© Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award.

Electrophysiology
We perform lifesaving procedures in our electrophysiology lab that restore the heart’s rhythm, such as implanting pacemakers and automatic defibrillators. Our interventional heart specialists can diagnose—and frequently treat at the same time—irregularities in the heart’s electrical system.

Vascular surgery
Our specialists treat all the veins and arteries that make up the vascular system, except the cranium and heart. They are able to care for patients using sophisticated treatments from noninvasive diagnostic tests to minimally invasive procedures to complex surgeries.

Expanding care
The new Heart and Vascular Center at Harrison will open in July 2010. We’re investing $14.6 million and 10,500 square feet to bring patients a full scope of minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures. The center will include ultramodern technology within cardiac catheterization labs, a cardiac/peripheral interventional lab, an electrophysiology lab, and a 12-bed pre- and post-care nursing unit.
