Yew Chung International School of Hong Kong

IB World School - Unique Approach to the holistic education of students

The International Baccalaureate Programme is a world recognized curriculum encouraging students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged world citizens. Yew Chung adopted the programme as an integral part of furthering the Yew Chung philosophy of educating students with the needs of the 21st century in mind.

Yew Chung is governed by a philosophy that is based on bringing together the cultures of the East and West using English and Chinese dual language learning as a means of entering into and absorbing Eastern and Western cultures. The school is in the forefront of a worldwide move away from using any national curriculum to an international curriculum, from parochial mindsets to world mindedness, from local perspectives to international perspectives and from languages as simply linguistic structures to languages as channels for the absorption of cultures. We define an international education by what goes on inside a student - It is about the internal transformation of a child by the international school's culture created by the co-teaching and multicultural learning environment, the Co-Principals administration, admission, the overall content and process which links to the character formation of a child.

By developing the whole person, our students grow and they are transformed. As a result of this transformation, their minds are expanded, lives are changed and most importantly, their future is wide open.

To implement the mission, Yew Chung has developed an international curriculum. English is the primary language of instruction. We also offer a strong Chinese Language Studies Programme and students are expected to attain a high level of fluency in both oral and written English and Chinese. Upon successful completion of the International G.C.S.E., students undertake further education in the International Baacalaureate Diploma programme.

Yew Chung students also participate in co-curricular activities, which are incorporate into the curriculum as an integrated learning approach that allows students to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired within the context of a particular subject area in activities such as World classroom, inter-subject study tours or CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) programme for IB students.

On the other hand, Yew Chung International School provides support programmes to provide the continued academic and personal growth of a student inside and outside the classroom. These programmes help to not only enhance a student's academic record, but also to encourage the development of important aspects of the individual, such as inter- and intra-personal skills, awareness of the community and the world, as well as pursuit of their interests.

A Counselling and Support Programme helps all secondary students from years 7-13 to learn more about their strengths and weaknesses as well as to maximize their own potential with an on-campus support team; an Art and Music Programme for all year levels 7-13 offers students many artistic activities in conjunction with learning academic subjects; and a Community Service Programme raises students' awareness of their community as well as the world around them by developing their sense of caring.

Starting from Year 9, a University Placement Counselor begins to work with students to help them prepare for education beyond YCIS through the development of a personalized student profile. We also have a university placement office which assists students to research different education systems and identify and learn about universities overseas as well as in Hong Kong and Mainland China, in order to create many options for university applications. Typically, our Yew Chung students apply to universities in more than one country, and they receive multiple acceptances and offers for entry into such universities as University of Cambridge, London School of Economics (LSE), Imperial College London, Cornell University, Northwestern University, University of Toronto, McGill University, University of British Columbia (UBC), the Swiss Hotel Management School, the Rhode Island School of Design, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, among many others. We are committed to parents to provide all the resources and the environment to guide our students through a process leading to 100% university placement.

Yew Chung is now gaining increased international recognition, as more and more educators become impressed by the unique philosophy and bilingual bicultural model Yew Chung has so successfully implemented. Yew Chung has been invited to host the Alliance for International Education (AIE) conference in October 2006, the first AIE conference to be held outside Europe. Yew Chung receives requests regularly from other schools around the world interested in implementing our Chinese language and Culture programme. Such international activity reflects the high standard we have achieved releasing a new momentum in the development of Yew Chung.
