On November 11, 1889, Washington became the 42nd state to enter the Union. It is the only state named for a president. Washington was nicknamed "The Evergreen State" by C.T. Conover, pioneer Seattle realtor and historian, for its abundant evergreen forests. The nickname was adopted by the Legislature in February, 1893.

Washington

Washington is an exciting, vibrant and unique location in the United States. Boasting a vast variety of landscapes, including the only rainforest on the continental U.S., Washington provides opportunities to indulge in virtually any outdoor sport or hobby imaginable. Don't let the rumors of constant rain dissuade you, on average Washington receives less rain than most eastern seaboard states!

If your preferences lean more towards shopping and fine dining, Washington will not disappoint. A liberal climate in the larger cities such as Seattle and Tacoma fuels a diverse cultural lifestyle. Orchestras, ballet companies and museums are only a few of the offerings to be found in Washington. Indeed, Seattle is said to be the birthplace of grunge music. Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden all got their start playing in the various clubs and coffeehouses of downtown Seattle.

Seattle coffeehouses can hardly be mentioned without bringing to mind the ubiquitous Starbucks chain. Headquartered in Seattle, the original Starbucks is still making lattes and mochacchinos only one block from its original location near the Pike Place Market.

Whether you're looking for good fishing, national sports teams or a 4-star meal followed by an evening at the symphony, Washington will not disappoint.
